Dr. Debra Currie O.D.
A native of Fredericton, N.B, Dr. Currie attended UNB from 1986 to 1988 studying Physics and Biology before going to the University of Waterloo to study Optometry. She graduated from UW in 1992 with a Doctor of Optometry degree. Upon graduation, Dr. Currie was awarded the A.W. Cole Award for Clinical Excellence.
In 1992, Dr. Currie began practicing in Bedford and Dartmouth. In 1994 she moved to Saint John, N.B to practice for a year before moving to Auckland, New Zealand in 1995. In New Zealand, Dr. Currie was a clinical tutor and supervisor at the University of Auckland, School of Optometry. She returned to Nova Scotia to practice in 1996. In June of 1998, Dr. Currie purchased an established practice in Lower Sackville and ran it as a solo practice until January 2001. At that time, Dr. Currie joined the partners at Doctors’ Eye Clinic.
When Dr. Currie was a student, she took two volunteer trips (one to Honduras and the other to Guyana) to perform eye exams on the local population. She also spent 2 summers working at an institution in Orillia, Ontario performing eye exams on mentally challenged adults. Dr. Currie has also volunteered to teach literacy skills to adults with the Halifax Regional Library. In 1999, Dr. Currie volunteered to help examine Kosovar refugees in Halifax.
Dr. Currie has been a member in good standing with the Nova Scotia Association of Optometrists and the Canadian Association of Optometrists since she began practicing in 1992. Dr. Currie has served as on the Council of the Nova Scotia Association of Optometrists as well as numerous committees including: Annual General Meeting, Public Relations, Children’s Vision and Newsletter.
When Dr. Currie returned to Halifax in 1996 she met her future husband, Paul, and they were married in 1999. In 2001, they welcomed twin boys (Malcolm and Charlie) to their family. Dr. Currie is an avid reader, although there doesn’t seem to be enough time these days to read as much as she’d like. She also enjoys gardening, travelling and writing.
